Background-
Born on Druckenwell to a middle-class family he rose through the Trade Federation ranks thanks to his family's political connections within the Corporation, serving for some years on Neimoidia and even a brief spell with the TDF, he returned to Druckenwell three years ago and was appointed the ranking Trade Federation official in the system, "Customs Vizier". Effectively, this role was a sinecure from the Directorate who wished to see a human represent the Trade Federation in the Senate and so break the perception of the Federation as being "Alien Dominated".
However, the Humans within the Directorate found it extremely difficult to agree on which one of them ought to become Senator, for two reasons. Firstly, because the position of Senator is one of great prestige and honour, allowing an individual to retire comfortably after holding it. But secondly, the fact that the Senate on Coruscant is so far from the Head Office on Neimoidia that the individual taking up the position would potentially be out of the loop when important decisions were made by the Directorate as a whole; and worse, no Senator of the Trade Federation has become Viceroy in a century, so becoming Senator would mean standing aside from the climb up to the top of the TF.
Thus Prentiss was sent essentially as a concensus candidate, never having offended any of the Directorate and loyal, making himself a suitable leader for the sizeable Trade Federation Senate bloc. He's pushed an agenda to solidify the position of the Federation but had had few actual challenges as yet.
