Background: Artemis Vanden is the first Duke of the New Mandalorian people to be born on the planet Mandalore instead of Kalevala, the homeworld of the pacifist New Mandalorian ideology. Raised within the palatial confines of the New Mandalorian capital of Mandalore, the domed city of Sundari, Vanden was taught to pity the reactionary "True Mandalorians" who refuse to let go of Mandalore's bloody past. To Vanden, the New Mandalorian way of life represents order and progress while the traditionalist True Mandalorians stand for anarchy. Still, for most of his life he considered the True Mandalorians not as enemies, but as misguided brothers.
That all changed in an attempt on Vanden's life, perpetrated by True Mandalorian insurgents who shot down his yacht, the Peacemaker, over Mandalore. Vanden's pregnant wife, Mesh'la, was killed in the resulting crash. A hardened man from that day on, Artemis Vanden became intolerant of the True Mandalorians—referred to by Vanden as "Old Mandalorians"—and implemented a zero-tolerance policy for the observance or practice of Old Mandalorian codes and customs. He also established the Mandalorian Secret Service, a security force capable of combating Old Mandalorian insurgents.
