Stepping Aside.

After weeks (nay, months) of consideration, I've decided to significantly reduce my footprint, such as it currently is, in Legends and in RP generally, and to step down as a manager of both Legends and A Galaxy At War. I have no memorable speech to give on this occasion, as has likewise been the case for many RPers before me and, indeed, many better than me. If I had any such words left, I would sooner give them to this hobby that I love and have loved for some 13 years. I have given many words to RP in that time, as well as many, many hours, and a few dollars, too. In return, I have taken the pleasure of your company; I feel I have benefited from having known all of you and gained insights into the human experience that I wouldn't otherwise have. Indeed, I have more knowing relationships with some of you than with many other people in my life, and I'm sure the same is true of you, as well.

We stand now among the last, dwindling days of this hobby. The definition of a 'role-playing game' has changed drastically over the last decade. I suspect it is inconceivable to today's generation that descriptive writing was considered fun, much less a 'game.' With the rise of personal technology, people no longer have the attention spans for this sort of RP, and that is a shame. This experience has been far more intellectually-rewarding for me than any video game possibly can. But I also feel this hobby has aged me beyond my years; I no longer have the time or the creative energy to devote to RP. This has become obvious in recent weeks as I've failed to post in a timely manner. It's only fair and right that I acknowledge this, and remove any expectation of me posting in the first place.

I hope you'll continue to RP. I hope, indeed, that I'll continue to RP, though in a much-reduced capacity without management responsibilities. I'll do what I can to transfer the site-managing tools to Jaron and 'Mike' who, for those of you who don't know, is Adam. I think he has proven himself to be a fair manager. I do close, however, with a warning: beware so-called 'alternate-universe' settings; in diverging from the Star Wars canon, they rapidly lose any resemblance to the source material. Experience has shown, time and again, that this type of RP doesn't last. I also urge that the tradition of fair and dispassionate enforcement of written and well-understood rules—a legacy of Legends, A Galaxy At War, and A Galaxy Divided before it—is carried on. Insist on no less, wherever it is you do RP.

No, I'm not going to tell you who I am. You already know who I am—what, indeed, does a name matter? I'll still be around, though for how long, I can't say; I need to focus on other priorities in order to become more comfortably situated in life, but I'm certain to take my 13 years of insights and experiences in RP with me in whatever it is I do.

Well Jace, for starters, you aren't quitting. I can't quit, so you can't. I've been absent because of a move and because I've been more or less forced to go to anger management (read: behavioral health) issues because of a few things I did at work. That being said, you're not stepping down and I'm sure you'll post as much as you can. In the meantime, we need to talk on messenger.

Need I remind you the last time you stepped aside? Strangers ran the group practically into the ground and it was pretty much Management (with apparently Jabba the Hutt having mood swings) against the rest of the members; criticizing everyone's profile, posts, etc etc (it was horrible, and I hope those jackasses burn). And like Adam said, you can't quit. Because if you quit, then Jaron quits. And when he quits, medal and ribbon companies world wide will go out of business! We can't have that! Remember, it's the shoulders (and apparently the the long legs for all his blood strips from the Empire, Republic, CorSec, Jedi Order, and for being number 1 in Roadside assistance!) All I'm saying is give peace a chanceeeeeeeeee! And if you quit... I will go do something to your car. o.o

Your friendly neighborhood Jedi

The last time I stepped down wasn't by choice, despite what I said at the time. I wasn't then nor am I now responsible for what occurs while I'm not a manager. This time, however, I'm confident that I'm making the best decision for me and, who knows, perhaps the best decision for the RP too. I'm often an "obstructionist," if you will, when it comes to requests, and while I stand behind each and every one of my votes to deny a request, and while I furthermore believe these have been good for the health of the RP, I also acknowledge that there's a difference of opinion on this. Perhaps it's time for another school of thought? But that, as I said, is not up to me.

I do believe that Jaron, if he wishes to and if he applies himself to the task, can be an able manager of this or perhaps even another RP site of his making. (As long as he doesn't tinker with the security settings or site design templates and does NOT attempt to advertise the RP on another site—at least, not with a hyperlink to our site for spambots to follow. Any advertisements for the RP should be images only, no links. But word-of-mouth is better anyway, in my opinion). It is kind of funny that your post ended up being a Jaron-bashing screed, but hey, cut him some slack (Jaron that is, not my brakes).

By the way, I abused my management power just once, and I've always felt bad about it. When Shiva and Jamie the Hutt were scheming with each other in encrypted messages, I signed into the account of Jamie the Hutt, knowing that Shiva had probably private messaged the decryption key to that account and, having thus obtained the key, I decrypted and read the messages. But since the PM was then marked as "read," I had to make a second Shiva account and send an identical PM to Jamie the Hutt's account, whilst deleting the original. No one has noticed to this day. I'm not proud of this—yes, yes I am—but to be fair, it's actually possible to do all of that without management powers, so I suppose it's not really an abuse of authority.

Also, I'm the batman.

Havoc, you always know how to make someone feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

On a more positive note, now is the time, after a couple of months of this, to get input from you; the players. What do you guys think would improve the RP?

Now that I'm a player (don't hate), I assume that applies to me too:

♦ Some disposable villain characters to give the good guys something to do—there are many, many good guys, but few bad guys in the RP so far, and it's bad guys who drive the story. For instance, I had envisaged an "Iron Monger"-type character with a vendetta against the Jedi; a good short-term villain to bring the Jedi characters together. Or a corrupt Republic official, say, who is smuggling slaves in league with the Hutts, and a handful of either Jedi or intrepid Judicials can unearth the slaving operation and put a stop to it. Things of this nature.

♦ I think instead of each Hutt having considerable forces, we should have a single Hutt character who is nominally in charge of the Hutt Cartel and commands the lion's share of the Hutt navy. This character would have real power in the RP and thus rival Hutt characters would have an incentive to try to oust him/her and take over the Cartel, instead of being content with their own fiefdoms as is now the case. Also, a religious rift among the Hutts might be interesting.

♦ It would be good if the leadership of Dantooine and Naboo were as inclusive as possible, finding ways to involve other characters on their planets and give them things to do. Ditto for the Hutts and especially Jedi Masters. The Masters we have really need to step up and provide some leadership to the rest of the Jedi. For instance, Daneira saved a dying man in a damaged freighter, but once they made it back to the Luminosity, no other Jedi showed up to provide medical assistance. Would have been a good place for a Master to step in.

That, and everybody hang in there during the summer months when a lot of us tend to be busy.

My suggestions are meant to encourage people to post more, rather than simply telling them to persist in doing something that's not necessarily fun for them. Telling people to "Just post" is a bit like someone in a movie saying "Don't you die on me!" to someone who's dying. (Plus I would argue the "Just post" strategy hasn't worked that great so far).
