Meditation Rooms
The "Luminosity"

It was an ambush.

There were too many droids, Atrya and Dani had no choice but to give up and
relinquish their weapons. The two of them had no chance, and no chance
of escape, it seemed. Once in captivity, the Chancellor Gratus revealed
himself and the only thing the pair overheard was that he had something
planned for the Jedi. They had no idea what. At that point, Atrya
created a distraction in attempt to escape and Dani was able to get her
lightsaber in her grasp.

"Daneira, go!"

"I am not leaving you here!"

"I am telling you, as your Master and friend, GO!"

Daneira Farris snapped out of her short lived meditation with a start.  It had been difficult for her to concentrate long enough to be able to meditate since Bellassa; since she saw Atrya die.  The wounds had healed, but the scars ran deep it seemed.  She dragged herself up off of the floor and moved to one of the windows before she pressed the button to throw the shade up.  There was nothing out there except space.  Infinite, dark, swirling space.

Sometimes it made her think of Karth- the time they laid on the grass in the courtyard of the Jedi temple, when they were children, pretending that they could see the stars.  Of course they couldn't, as the city planet had entirely too much light pollution, but it was a good escape when either one of them was having a bad day.  She remembered squeezing his hand some days; letting him know it would be alright when he was sad or upset.  And she remembered laying her head on his shoulder and letting him comfort her.  He was easily her best friend...and she missed him.

Idly, the Jedi Knight rubbed her eyes with her fingertips before she let her lids slide open again and she looked back out at the darkness.  Finally, she slammed her hand against the button and let the shade closed before she turned around and slid to the floor with her back against the wall.

Jace had been wandering around the Luminosity for perhaps an hour, finding it no less stolid than the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, if not more so. The Padawan, unruly-haired and unruly in other respects too, was fresh from Coruscant where he'd spent most of his life. He was grateful for the change of scenery, if rather disappointed that the Luminosity so closely resembled the Jedi Temple. He had declined a tour of the ship from a protocol droid who appeared to have taken it as an insult. None intended, though; Jace simply believed that the best way to know a new place was to get lost in it, and by now he was certainly lost in the Luminosity.

The Padawan was a bit of a problem for the Jedi Order. Jace was stubborn—a free and critical thinker who wouldn't take "Because" as an answer to his many questions. None of the Masters particularly wanted to train him. Jace had shown some ability as a pilot—indeed, he'd traveled all the way from Coruscant in his tiny Delta-6 interceptor, another good reason to stretch his legs on the Luminosity—but he was a poor student in other areas. He didn't agree with how the history of the Jedi Order was taught, for instance. And he was an unapologetically lousy swordsman. Exasperated, the Council had sent him to the Agricultural Corps. more than once. But the Masters knew that Jace, who was strong in the Force, didn't belong there. He supposed that the Council hoped the change of scenery would do him good.

It certainly didn't help matters that Jace was rather awkward around other people (he'd even managed to offend the protocol droid). When he came upon one of the meditation rooms and found Daneira inside, he didn't hesitate to interrupt her. "Hello there," he said, poking his head through the door and waving a hand in greeting. Only then did he sense that something was troubling Daneira. She was pensive. "Oh," he stammered, "Sorry if I'm interrupting. It's, uh, my first day. Here, I mean. On the Luminosity." Good one, Jace.

While the sound of the voice didn't startle her, the fact that someone caught her in such a state did.  Daneira whipped her head around and took a quick glance over her shoulder at the Padawan before she turned to face him.  She shook her head briefly and forced a small smile.  "You didn't interrupt anything, don't worry."  She reassured him calmly.  Just as quickly as she had been pensive, and perhaps a bit upset, the Jedi appeared to be just fine.  Like a normal day at the office.

"It's a big ship.  Don't protocol droids usually show the new kids around?"  She asked, though she didn't mean any insult when she used the word "kids".  She called everyone that, well, everyone in groups.  "I mean...did you not get a tour?  Or are you just wandering and lost?"  Dani re-phrased somewhat before she leaned back against the window ledge and crossed her arms at her mid-section.

"Oh...I'm Daneira Farris, by the way."  She said before she pushed herself back up to stand and crossed the room in a few easy and very graceful steps.  It would be obvious that she was very light on her feet and grace came naturally to her, but that was genetically ingrained from her Hapan mother.  He wouldn't know that, of course, unless he already had read her profiles, which was entirely possible.  Dani offered him a hand in greeting.  "And you are...?"  She assumed he was a Padawan, but wondered who's Padawan he was.

Whatever had been troubling Daneira seemed suddenly to evaporate, as far as Jace could tell. Or he could have been wrong in the first place. He'd always had an aptitude for the "control" powers of the Force pertaining to one's mind, and was good at sensing the thoughts and feelings of others. But Jace, a chronic self-doubter, would be the first to admit he could be wrong. But it didn't matter, Daneira's thoughts were her own. Daneira, he thought, What a nice name. And familiar, too. "I'm Jace," he said, "Varitek. I'm a Padawan." It was fairly obvious, of course, from the small, grungy braid in his hair, strategically hidden behind his ear. It was one of many Jedi customs he (clearly) didn't care for.

He shook her hand. "I'm from Metellos—originally, I mean. I came here from the Jedi Temple. On Coruscant, that is." He noticed that he was still shaking her hand, and released it promptly. He cleared his throat. "And you're right, I'm lost. I'd hoped that it wasn't that obvious that I don't get out much." He shrugged. "I like it though, being lost. It's new for me," he told her, taking a few ponderous steps around the meditation room. He explained to her his philosophy, that the best way to know a new place was to get lost in it and have to find his way around. Then he noticed the shade that she'd closed over the viewport. "Do you mind?" he asked, looking for the button to open the shade and finding it a moment later. "I slept most of the way here, and my droid brought me in—didn't really have a chance to appreciate the view."

He pressed the button, opening the shade, and the same vista of space became visible again outside the viewport. But where Daneira had seen 'nothing but space,' Jace seemed quite taken. He'd seen space before, sure—during piloting lessons with Master Koon, who had admonished him to not let himself be distracted. Seldom in his life had he simply appreciated the sight of space, as he did now. He smiled, almost sadly. "You know," he said, "When I was younger, I used to pretend I could see the stars on Coruscant. Never could, of course. Or on Metellos, either. Too much pollution. It's nicer than I imagined, though." He frowned, thinking to himself. "That's not usually so."

He shook his head and turned to face her again. "Sorry," he said, sheepishly, "Didn't mean to be rude." Perhaps Master Koon was right about him being too easily distracted. His first impression of Daneira, however, was that she was distracting in a different and altogether pleasant sort of way. He hadn't, in fact, read about her, but he was certain now that he'd heard her name before. Daneira Farris... "You're a Jedi Knight?" he asked her.

Daneira actually smiled, genuinely, as the Padawan shook her hand....then kept shaking her hand for what could have been considered an abnormal amount of time.  He seemed a bit awkward, or like his mind wandered off course, and then he suddenly realized it and dropped her hand. She didn't say anything, of course, but it was somewhat amusing none the less.

Metellos, when he said it she thought about the name for several long moments as she tried to focus and remember where it was. "I'm sorry, I don't recall where Metellos is, Jace. I'm from...well...Coruscant. My father was from there and my mother from Hapes." She explained, just offering friendly conversation in return. Surely he would recognize both of those planets, seeing as how the Jedi temple he had come from was on one, and Hapes was...Hapes. Everyone she had ever met knew she was at least part Hapan from the moment they met her; graceful, beautiful, endlessly deep eyes just like her mother. Not that she could see it herself. Most times she felt like an awkward turtle of sorts.

As he spoke again, she snapped out of it.  "No, you're fine, Jace. Not rude at all. I used to do the same thing with my best friend back on Coruscant.  The first time you actually see it, it's so beautiful, I understand." Dani said, her voice quieting for a moment. "And yes, I'm a Knight." His question about her rank made her wonder for only a moment, but she would try to steer the direction of the conversation. Many had heard of the tragedy on Belassa, but she didn't particularly want to discuss it.

"So why were you sent here, Jace? Are you going to study under Master Tching for a while? I have heard that he is quite good. And if he's not already on board, he should be soon." She hadn't been paying attention to the comings and goings, obviously, of the others aboard the ship.

A Jedi Padawan would be seen entering the mediation room, one that may seems similar in appearance of an ordinary Padawan. There was nothing ordinary about the person inside the outfit that of a Padawan, though. He was born on Taris, but he never really had a memory of the planet itself. Darwin was just a baby when his parents decided to give him away to the Jedi Order, one that made happened by an appearance of an unnamed Jedi Knight. The young Jedi went through the most of his life without a Master. Sure, there was Master Yoda teaching him back when he was in the Bear Clan. Sure, there were a few Masters taking him on trial basis but he seems to never satisfy any Masters.

Darwin does not have many friends, but anyone that knows him would know his strongest traits are that he has a deep loyalty to the Jedi and he has a big heart. His greatest strengths and weaknesses would be to help people too much. But also thinks too highly of himself, constantly feels like he should take on others' responsibilities. That can feel like a burden, sometimes. An unnecessary one at most. Because he does not have many friends, and has always been a lone wolf, he began to develop trust issues. Even among his brothers and sisters within the Order. For that reason alone, he does not like to speak much. Not because he was shy, but because he felt he did not need to say more than what was necessary. The Padawan is very much a scientific person as he is a religious one. His beliefs are that in order to become a complete Jedi, one must improve all the aspects of life in order to discover the truth not only behind the Force but also the universe.

Upon entering the room, he would spot another Jedi equal to his very own rank as well as a Knight. Jace was a face he had seen a few times back on Coruscant, but never got around to formally introduce each other. A quick reflex would appear, "Sorry for interrupting. I didn't realize there were company here." The Padawan always felt he was in getting everybody's way, and was getting ready to turn back...unless he would be invited into conversation, that is.

"That's okay," he said, hooking his thumbs on his belt as he continued to glance around the room. "I barely remember the place, but I don't know—it's something I can say for myself, I guess. You know how it is at the Temple." Indeed, all the younglings at the Jedi Temple had basically the same childhood (or lack thereof, as was more often the case). Younglings knew and did all the same things; individuality was discouraged at this age. Jace wasn't a child anymore, of course, but he hadn't gone on the adventures that many of his age had. There were no Bellassas in his past, just countless hours tending crops—and sneaking out of his quarters at night to watch the holodramas. Wouldn't be much of either on the Luminosity though, he supposed. A mixed blessing.

"Yep. Master Tching," he said, a tinge of resignation in his voice. "He's supposed to make me into a good swordsman. Not sure what the point is, though; we're the only ones who use lightsabers. I don't see a lot of Sith around these days." He shrugged. "But I suppose they thought the change of scenery would do me good," he said, looking significantly at Daneira with a hint of a smile. "They may yet be right."

Jace almost jumped when Darwin spoke. He'd been distracted (again, ugh) and hadn't sensed him coming. "Interrupting?" he said, looking between Daneira and Darwin, "What? That's—don't be silly. What would we—? You're not interrupting. There's nothing. Going on, I mean. What would be going on? Just meditating, here in the meditation room. She was meditating, not me. Not that I don't—I meditate. I meditate all the time... I mean, not all the time, obviously. I'm not weird about it. I just wasn't meditating at that particular moment, just now."

Jace paused as a look of recognition crossed his face. He sighed, then grinned sheepishly. "Oh hey, Darwin Sky," he said, bowing his head cordially, "It's been forever. I didn't know you were here too."

Daneira reached out and rested her hand on Jace's shoulder, squeezing reassuringly.  "I don't know him very well, but what I do know is that Master Tching isn't so bad.  A little stuffy...maybe slightly difficult to understand....but not awful.  You'll learn a lot from him." She withdrew her hand and took a step back from the Padawan.  "And if I'm around, and you need someone to spar or practice with, you're welcome to come find me."  Dani smiled only a little.  "But I don't honestly know how much longer, or how often I will be around."  Silently, she hoped for a mission, and soon.  Not to get her away from the Padawan or the Luminosity, but away from her idleness.

She spoke up again, a moment later, to give some un-solicited for advice.  "You may not understand the point, Padawan, but you have to know that there is one.  Sith or not, there are other dangers in the galaxy that people need protected from.  I'm sure you will learn a lot here, once you let yourself learn and stop hiding behind personal beliefs."  Dani wasn't scolding him, not really, but trying to help him understand the point of his coming here.

When Darwin walked in, she simply looked over at him, unsurprised by his entrance.  "No, like Jace said, you aren't interrupting anything."

Darwin would raise his eyebrows once he heard Jace stammering, shaking his head once. He wasn't sure whether being on the ship was the best choice for him, but it was the only option to him at the time. The Jedi Council had decided to send him to the Jedi vessel because, apparently, they decided it would do him good. With no Masters wanting to take him under their wing, because he exhibited traits not that of an ordinary Jedi even though he had a deep loyalty to the Jedi. There was a reason he did not have many friends to start with. Unlike many Jedi, he craved adventures. For that reason, among others, he develop a love for flying.

He then spotted a beautiful, older Jedi. No doubtedly holding a rank of Jedi Knight. The Tarisian would bow down to the lady first then nodded out of respect to Jace. "Okay, good. I always feel like I'm stepping onto everyone's toes." He responded to the Knight first, because of the rank formality. Then he turned his gaze toward his peer, "Yeah, I was recently assigned to the Luminosity by the Council. I'm not sure this is the place for me, though." The Padawan would also recognize the stars, and didn't even hesitate to move toward the window. Like flying, he always felt like space was his home. Darwin let out a sigh of relief, starting to feel relaxed at the moment. "Stars are beautiful, aren't they?"

Jace considered himself scolded. He raised an eyebrow at Daneira's comments, a subtle sign of disagreement, but he didn't say what he was thinking; that a good blaster at your side was all well and good--the Jedi had plenty of enemies, after all—but lightsabers? A relic of an uncivilized age, as far as Jace was concerned. These days, people didn't settle their religious disputes by hacking each other's limbs off. Jace, like Darwin, much preferred flying. Oh, that's where he remembered Darwin from—Master Koon's flying lessons. Darwin was good behind the controls of a Aethersprite. Almost as good as Jace, in fact (though Darwin might fancy himself the better pilot, Jace begged to differ. Perhaps during their stay on the Luminosity they would have an opportunity to test their piloting skills against each other). He thought about saying so, but thought better of it—he'd made this situation awkward enough already.

Jace nodded in agreement with Darwin, then glanced at Daneira with something on his mind. "Daneira..." he said, still not sure where he'd heard that name before. He had heard about Bellassa when it happened—was it already a year ago?—but it wasn't a 'tragedy' as far as he knew. Rather, Coruscant had celebrated the 'Heroes of Bellassa' for thwarting a Dark Jedi conspiracy. The death of Daneira's master had been a tragedy, for sure, but easier for the rest of the Order to forget, perhaps, than it was for Daneira herself. But this wasn't what was on Jace's mind at the moment.

"... could you tell me where the 'fresher is?"
