| Necessity, Mother of Invention
Why player-created items are absolutely necessary to a game which is fixed in a certain period within the Star Wars Galaxy.
We currently play in a setting that is 93 years before the battle of Yavin. It was largely selected for being relatively uneventful in terms of canon events happening during the period. This means we are free to write our own stories within the three visible (metaphorically) dimensions of the Star Wars Universe we must have a fixed state in time to prevent anachronisms from slipping into our setting.
I believe that if we have the choice of being fixed at a certain time's level of technology etc then it is better than seeing Darth Vader accosting Chancellor Pryce in the lobby of the Senate. The Star Wars universe is rich in the detail of items, craft, buildings etc but is by no means complete. To a large extent players can use items appropriate to the time period or "precursors" which paper over the gap if it is for something minor.
Something that the Star Wars Galaxy abounds with in the EU is a diversity of ships and items that may be generic or specific to an organization of some sort. It is endlessly inventive and numerous corporate and planet specific craft, weapons etc are visible. This shows us that the writers of those stories believed it was sometimes needed to invent new things to make a creative story.
Now, with starships we run into an especially big problem during this period. Few canonical examples definitively exist at all, a number can be inferred to exist but still there is a good deal of ambiguity around a lot of vessels created "decades before the clone wars". This gives us limited options if we want to have ships and fleets which are legal under the Ruusan Reformation standards - several capital ships which may be from the period are illegal for ownership in the Republic, for example on account of length.
If we were to use only canon warships from the correct time period we would be left with a boring range of unexciting ships. This is because few canon sources have explored much in this era of the Republic.
So if in 93 BBY I say, ran Kuat Drive Yards (I do, coincidentally) there are no warships it produces listed definitively as existing before the present period.
If we are more liberal and say ships listed with no introduction date but were used before a specific event (often the Stark Hyperspace War) might be somehow safe, although there's 30 years of ambiguity till our time period. It's an assumption we have to make if we want Kuat Drive Yards, the biggest galactic shipwright would have it's list of craft for sale as below.
Bold signifes the craft, although not definitively proven to be in use, nothing proves that it does not exist and it has reasonably complete stats listed. Bold Strikethrough indicates the craft is exclusively produced for a given faction. Bold Italic signifies the craft exists only as a picture, name or stats too minimal to work from, meaning if incorporated the design has to be completed by a player, making it effectively a custom design. Red Bold signifies the ship exists but is not legal for ownership under the Ruusan rules or not produced for anyone but KDY itself.
KDY Ships Catalog for 93 BBY, and for the sake of having ANY ships I will include the subsidiaries RHE and KSE, upon finding them exhausted I went for the remaining subsidiaries Ubrikkian Industries and Kuat Leisure
Procurator-class Battlecruiser Illegal under the reforms but also limited to powerful Core Worlds, Sectors and the Kuat Security Forces. Perhaps the got exemptions somehow, but the ship is too big and powerful for use in our scale of RP. Munifex-class Frigate Built for the Trade Defense Force and later cited in Imperial hands, it's possible the number we see in the game were surplus from the TDF. Lupus-class Missile Destroyer Never seen outside of TDF use. Auxilia-class Pursuit Destroyer Never seen outside of TDF use. Space Master Medium Transport Decent stats for game use given. The ship is never stated as being first produced in a given era in its sources. Realistically as it was still noted as being built in 8ABY it's likely an anachronism. It's a craft closely associated with the smugglers alliance and it is leaning toward the very dubious side. AP-300 Asteroid Prospector Aside from it's arms and silhouette we can conjecture it's probably for prospecting. Starjammer-IZX fast freight hauler A once cited gigantic super hauler without stats, all e know is it's big and made of Durasteel. Kuat Systems Transport II - Only info is it's name, assumed to be a Transport. The Cloakshape Fighter No contemporary or prior citations but stated to be made "decades before the Clone Wars" Wayfarer-class medium transport A ship which has no time period citation at all, but no first sighting in the future for the RP. 121B Yacht - A Yacht made "during the rule of the Republic" Minstrel Class Yacht The signature transport of the Hutts, never cited in a formal military setting made by Ubrikkian Industries. Trnspires the Ubrikkian Frigate right now that isn't cited as existing till the rebellion era, but they're not implied to be new then.. I feel like it's better our ones are "Precursors"
So the total ships that may be available for legal purchase from the biggest producer of spacecraft in the Galaxy and all it's subsidiaries, with comprehensive stats to allow their in game use are: Minstrel-class Yacht, The Wayfarer-class Transport Cloakshape Starfighter Space Master Medium transport
Four ships available from KDY to the public.
If we said that the Lupus and Munifex were sold to the public too, possibly as Military surplus, then we could tot it up to 6 ships.
The AP-300, Prospector, Starjackhammer Hauler, Kuat Systems Transport II, Auxilia Destroyer and 1218 Yacht are probably okay for use in the period , but without stats and often pictures in many cases, players create wonderful designs for these craft which while having a canon name or picture, have no canonicity in their statistics.
So producing any of the cannon craft listed for use within the game period, outside the lamentably inadequate 6 six mismatched craft would mean that they would be custom designs.
Ergo, the Majority of Canon Starships where stats have had to fill in are essentially a fusion of a canon bone around which a player created form is made. Because I play KDY (but mostly RHE in truth) and since RHE had no ships existing in the canon, and wishing to play the same shipyard I usaully run, I went ahead and decided to produce several vessels that were compliant with the Rusaan Rules and filled a need that players had and will have. I have used no exotic technology on these ships, nothing but the Rothana aesthetic and quality we see in the canon examples replicated across to the current "Ruusan Ranges" I have built and marketed the vessels for all players (not producing them only for my factional use), designed them myself but with the design aesthetic and sometimes even the concept art of the Kuat/Rothana draftsmen. The line is not finished, but it seems like requesting one more (as I was attempting to request them one at a time to not put further pressure on management), but since Adam/Mine is putting a half in my production process. I'll let you all in on the details.
The Elite Forces Range Expensive ships designed for the Judicial Forces elites, the better Core World navies, the Kuat Defense Force or Corporate Defense Fleets.
Tranquility-class Heavy Line Cruiser (Not requested: An early dagger-shaped Cruiser based) Rothana-class Assault Frigate (heavily armed pocket cruiser)
The Premium Range Corvettes and other craft which excel in a particular role for which they were designed. They can fill gaps in fleets abilities quickly with a simple Corvette buy and so have been exceedingly popular.
Justice-class Light Cruiser ( Unrequested line cruiser of 400m able to deploy Gun Platforms to areas which need defense or to deny areas of space to the enemy) Herald-class Comms Corvette (Comms and anti-Jamming craft) Ice-class (a picket ship and rapid responder) Obliterator-class (Gives small fleets anti-siege fire)
The Continuity Range Ships following a different design from standard Kuat/RHE shape by going for designs from the unused concept art of Core ships from the Alsakan Conflict, after all the Invincible-class is based on that aesthetic so here they are mirroring the strength and continuity of the core with the durability and heavy construction of these. These craft have and will be most popular with the Core Worlds, their Colonies who hold on to their heritage and polities with links to the Alsakan Conflicts.
Resolute-class Destroyer (Pending Request, Known as the "Emperor Jamulon-class Destroyer" in it's first sale to the Cygnus Star Empire but being re-released under it's correct name and with any shakedown lessons from the Cygnus version applied) it is hoped at RHE to act as a craft for sale to those Corephilic bodies that is similar in role to the Munifex-Class which is a TDF Exclusive, here the ship is built as if it was a Core Excusive, learning the lessons of the Munifex but keeping the strong hull and broadside capacity of older Republic ships) Bireme-class Heavy Corvette (A gunship/monitor or small line ship)
Alongside a newly converted Indomitable-class, a half dozen frigates and dozen corvettes would look the very spit and image of the Core Fleets fielded by the Republic.
The Rothana Sub-Capital Range
High Speed Light Interceptor (A simple interceptor based on the industry standard with focus on speed)
High Speed Capital Deterrent Craft (The Rothana answer to a bomber, uses turbolasers on an armoured shuttle type hull to inflict the same samage but with longer operational time)
I've catered to the needs of players of all types and kept things in line with SW, I'm sorry I make you guys a lot of work but it's for the good of the Game Ultimately.
