She didn't have to check the time to know it was nearly four in the morning. For years, she'd wake in the early morning, always around this time. Restless, and unable to shake the fragments of her past, falling back to sleep was near to impossible. This unbroken pattern, started with a promise that was made eleven years ago. He promised he would be there. And that they would finally have the life they always wanted. They would be together. Forever. She waited for him. "Four a.m." he said.

Memories of that day, sifted through her thoughts. Like snowflakes, on a cold winters day. When she returned home, her grandfather had been waiting for her in the foyer. "I can explain..." He lifted his hand, silencing her as he turned to face her. Disappointment, echoed inside his ice blue eyes as his gaze swept across her form. "If you would just,"she began, but he would not hear what she had to say. "Grandfather. I..."Enough!" He bellowed, with a long stride he crossed the distance between them. Strong arms bared down upon her small shoulders, forcing her back so that her weight was distributed on her heels.

"You are my heir. My only. Living. Heir." He started to say. His eyes softening as he stared at her tear streaked face. But that moment had vanished just as quickly as it had come. "You are every bit your father. Impatient. Headstrong. Adored by both, Tapani nobility, and lowborns...like your mother. She was his mistake, you know. The catalyst behind his death. I warned him of her kind. He just played it off as if it were a passing trend. I forbid them to marry, but she was already with child. He said it was his duty. Tell me. What duty does a Lord of Melantha have to a common whore? She ended up leaving him, as I predicted, but not in the way I had imagined. You were born the day she died. Don't misunderstand me, child. It was the drugs that stopped his heart. But it was his love for your mother that killed him. I will not lose you both. You are to leave here at once. Provisions have beem made for your departure. When you are ready to resume your duties as Lady of this house. Then, and only then, will I send for you. "

"Why now? After all this time," she wondered. Whatever the cause behind her grandfathers request. It would soon be known to her. In just a few hours, she will be in Procopia. She knew this day would come. Where she would return to the very place that had cost her so much. She was a different person now. She was no longer that reckless, naive little girl. This Fajra. Her grandfather could be proud of.
