TOP STORY: PALACE COUP ON CYGNUS PRIME! Cygnus Empire former buffer state now “effectively hegemonized” by the Hutts say Tionese and other groups.
An unexpected coup occurred today after Emperor Woodkirk XI of the Cygnus Star Empire was killed in an unexpected accident when his venerable flagship (an ancient Alsakan Battleship) suffered a catastrophic failure of it's safety systems caused it to lose orbital integrity as it performed a gravatic slingshot around Cygnus Prime. The Techno Union expert spokesman replied to our questions on the incident stating "It is not advisable to operate a three thousand year old vessel without constant intensive maintenance as we provide for many Republic and Planetary museum vessels, this ship was notoriously poorly serviced for centuries and this tragic incident reflects the seriousness of the health and safety regulations employed at the Techno Union."
All hands were reported lost. The heir to the Throne of the long-ruling House Woodkirk was aboard leaving the succession in grave question. "The succession to the Throne of the Cygnus Star Empire is a peculiarly strange one, the heir is required to be an individual within the Royal Family with a particular genetic quirk in a single gene that was held by the first Emperor. Of course gene matter is conferred arbitrarily by the gametes of each parent and so selection among the royal family is almost random. Thus have several bloody civil wars been the only recourse in the past to decide who will rule if one candidate is not obviously more prominent or nominated by the previous Emperor. Several dozen of each generation possess the genetic mutation within the House Woodkirk." was how the succession system is described by Luneray Kruus' award winning "The History of the Galaxy"
Shortly after the death of Woodkirk XI was announced publicly there were reports of gunfire in the palace. The Palace has been largely guarded in recent times by the agents of the Huttese head of the Palace Guard. This Hutt, Jamulon Desilijic Tiure was before being employed by the Cygnus Emperor a minor noted figure in Hutt Space known for aggressive business practice by his "search and rescue" company being compared to piracy by the Trade Federation after several incidents between distressed Republic chartered vessels. His legal business ventures ranged into salvage and "general transportation" as well as owning a number of cantinas. According to the Judicial Service Jamulon Tiure was also thought complicit in smuggling spice into Republic Space as well as running protection rackets inside Hutt Space and surrounding areas.
This thuggish figure was a controversial one in the Cygnus Star Empire, being detested by some and loved by others in the sprawling Government of the Swan Palace on Cygnus Prime. Many distrusted him for his methods and conduct during the successful campaign conducted in the last two years against pirates in the Cygnus Star Empire. Accusations were made against Tiure that he was simply paying the pirates that have infested the region to stop their activities after his exorbitant expenses were presented to the Government while refusing to present accounts. These concerns were dismissed by the Emperor as "petty scandal". The Trade Federation commented in the past years that the safety increase within the Cygnus Star Empire was "significant" and restarted a monthly cargo route to Cygnus Prime six months ago, a move unpopular in Hutt Space due to the long term animosity between the Trade Federation and the Hutt Council.
Having solved much of the piracy in the region, Jamulon was trusted by the Woodkirks and invited to guard the palace. As such the hereditary members of the Royal Regiment of Guards was largely replaced in its daily duties by assorted humans and other species armed and dressed rather as Huttese toughs typically are. Rumours of extortion and protection rackets in the city around the palace were common but the notoriously aloof and decadent Woodkirk Emperor likely was unaware of such conduct despite his ministers public objections. Thus nefarious conduct at the Palace was to an outside observer, predictable.

After the reports of Gunfire at the Palace an announcement was made that the Royal Regiment of Guards had mutinied in an attempt to introduce a Junta. The likelihood of this being factual appears minimal as according to a palace insider the Hereditary Guard had only sixteen members at the palace during the incident, twelve of whom were over sixty, the others all at least forty, furthermore the Royal Regiment of Guards has served loyally to the Woodkirk family for 9 generations. The announcement went on to state that the people of the Cygnus Star Empire deserved better than a civil war (the likely result of a succession crisis) and so Jamulon Tiure had agreed to take on the title of Jamulon Bey, bey being an archaic Huttese term for Sovereign, to protect the people of the Cygnus Star Empire and assure stability.
There has been little opposition in the Cygnus Star Empire thus far to the overthrow of the old order, a few officials appear to have disappeared however. The Hutt Grand Council issued a statement that the actions of Tiure in no way represented it or the Desilijic Kadijic, but it cautiously welcomed the statements of the new regime proposing increased friendly relations with the Hutts and inviting their business to the region as well as warmly welcoming Tiure's declaration of the official language of the Cygnus Star Empire as being Huttese. The Republic has so far not commented on the issue but debate in the Senate is expected. The Trade Federation office on Lannik expressed "concern". A joint declaration of outrage was signed by the rulers of a half dozen systems in the Republic close to Hutt Space, describing the move as a "bare faced coup", hundreds of other worlds also condemned the action in other statements.
Sub-Stories
- Markets in surrounding regions drop dramatically.
- Trade Federation issues statement that it guarantees the delivery of all its cargo and that it takes preventative measures to prevent piracy.- Jamie the Hutt, Bey of the Cygnus Star Empire stated in an interview replying to fears in the region about Hutt piracy. “Come now, I am not a criminal, I’ve never committed a crime or commissioned one, the stereotype that we are all gangsters is just a sensationalized media nonsense. Was not one of the best Chancellors of the Galactic Republic a Hutt?”
- Alsakan expresses regret at the crash of the ship it had granted as a gift to the Cygnus Star Empire several thousand years ago, saying it was a piece of history and its loss was one for the whole galaxy.
- The Resource Management Council says it hopes the new regime will take a robust and healthy attitude towards sustainable development and offers advisors to aid in a possible cleanup of the many toxic wastelands in the Cygnus Star Empire.
- Chief Justice of the Supreme Court controversially lets slip the statement that he doesn’t believe the Cygnus Star Empire should exist. He expressed the view that there should be one Galaxy under one Republican Government and little kingdoms or allied regions shouldnt be allowed to reap the benefits of the Republic’s presence without contributing. When questioned on what these benefits were he stated “These little allied regions and petty client states are almost invariably enclaves within Republic space, the Republic surrounds and protects them, the shipping to and from their worlds is guarded, so why do they deserve special rights just because they gave aid thousands of years ago in an almost forgotten war”
- Trade Federation delegate calls to expand armament on freighters to protect cargo in uncertain times caused by the Cygnus Crisis.
- Over a hundred core worlds come out in support of Senator Terrawin’s comprehensive calls to increase public security, including a call to ban warships ships being in the core worlds (hyperlanes excluded) unless they are Republic vessels or in the space of the world they serve. Notion is rebutted extensively by Corporates including Kadram of the Techno Union and Cynum of the Trade Federation.
- There was outrage today at the annual meeting of the Fellows of the Intergalactic Zoological Society when controversial Xenobiologist Dr Pluto Cratwright made his inaugural speech criticising what he said was the “anthropomorphization of fundamentally different species” going on to say “There are species represented in the Senate which are not truly sentient, if you teach a dog to raise a paw for a treat it will do so, similarly many species of aliens imitate humans for gain but dont truly have the ability to show empathy or any other sentient emotion”
