Having enjoyed a trip to his home sector to visit his constituents for two weeks, and a vacation to his homeworld for Life Day for another two, as was his custom at the end of every year, he returned to Coruscant feeling refreshed and ready to begin his duties as Chair of the Judiciary Committee, having spent his last week of vacation making selections for membership. Sadly, this month of a rather enjoyable experience was preceded by another near-month spent on Duro after a factory accident led to a massive controversy over worker safety and industry standards. Much to the chagrin of the government and industrialists, he was on the side of the workers and the unions. Well known for his advocacy of workers and the lower class, almost as much as his extremely modest lifestyle and donation of his discretionary income since entering the Senate to financial assistance programs for the lower class, he was a controversial figure back home, especially with its heavily integrated military-industrial complex, which he often railed against.

He walked into Corucant as a deviation from the norm, if the popular opinion was to be upheld; and many of the most notable Senators gave no argument against the popular opinion of the Senate being true. He did not let this dampen his spirit nor did he feel temptation to give in to the corruption of so many. He would not sell himself, under any circumstance. It was a shame they had such a disgrace for a Chancellor, not that he would say so publicly. He wished he could do something to change the path the Republic had been put on, but he presently saw little in possibility for himself. Then again, he did always try to find the worst-case scenario.

He walked into the committee hearing room with politics on his brain. It was time to return to the fight, and he promised to hold the hearing, but if Pryce thought he would be a puppet, he was looking to place his strings on the wrong Senator. After some moments of organization, and final discussion with aides, he and the members of the committee took their seats while the press began to get settled, all while awaiting Admiral Oswaldt's entrance.

Oswaldt entered precisely on time, despite the hearing having been convened on short notice. No one would have blamed the Admiral for being late—no one but himself. Esseles was but a few hours from Coruscant, and Oswaldt had been on his way there less than an hour after he'd been notified of the hearing. As the Admiral of the Esselian Imperial Navy, he had long ago accepted the responsibility of representing not just himself, and not just the Navy either, but the Esselian Empire itself. Oswaldt, a hero to his people, stood stubbornly in the way of his Empire's long, slow decline. Derogatory remarks about the Esselian Empire as "the sick man of the Core Worlds" stopped when Oswaldt entered a room, his personal appearance as strictly-managed as the Esselian Navy—an institution whose reputation Oswaldt had mostly succeeded in rehabilitating in recent years.

Still, Esseles was seen as non-threatening enough for Oswaldt to be a safe choice to be Commandant of the Republic's Judicial Forces, another institution that was in need of rehabilitation. No one doubted Oswaldt's qualifications for the job; rather, this hearing was for the Senators to satisfy themselves that he wouldn't be a lackey to the gracelessly corrupt Chancellor Pryce who had appointed him (much to Oswaldt's surprise). He privately thought that Pryce was a piss-poor Chancellor, and that his only good decision was, in fact, appointing Oswaldt. The Chancellor, it seemed, had at least an ounce of good judgment, if perhaps only a single ounce.

As he seated himself opposite the Senators, Oswaldt was relieved to see Senator Kongming chairing the Committee. Kongming, like Oswaldt, was an Admiral of the Core Worlds and, like him, a creature of the naval ethos. But Kongming was a "creature" nonetheless—a Duros, specifically. Oswaldt nodded to each of the Senators in turn, but he paused for the briefest of moments on Kongming, to try to see how in the Corellian hells the Duros was any different from a Neimoidian. He had done this numerous times at the convocations for Admirals of the Core Worlds where he and Kongming had crossed paths, but exchanged few words. Oswaldt and the other Human officers tended to congregate separately from the non-Humans at such events. If Oswaldt appreciated the fact that Kongming, this time, was in the position of authority, it didn't show on his mustachioed face; from his stiff military bearing and the like expression on his face, he seemed to consider Kongming to be, at most, an equal. Whether he could do so for the duration of the hearing remained to be seen.

~ Oswaldt was asked questions. Oswaldt answered the questions. Kongming looked sick. He shuffled his notes anxiously and then excused himself to go to the closest possible refresher, having failed to take into account the laxative properties of the Toydarian dish he'd had for lunch that day. With no additional fanfare Oswaldt was confirmed as the next Commandant of the Judicial Forces. ~
