Klatooine's arid heat blasted Novak's face as he stepped from his cockpit. The half-covered crescent-shaped landing pad in the capitol of Treema was barely enough to ward off the wind that scoured the mostly desert planet. The Klatooinians, quite possibly, were one of the most ancient species of the galaxy and Klatooine itself had been in indentured servitude. Nonetheless, a species known for their mercenary prowess and warrior ability was quite possibly one that would point Novak in the direction he needed. If there was any place more likely to be visited by a fleeing Sith Lord in desperate need of troops on the fly, where else to look but in Hutt Space?

The information he'd found pointed still to three sectors of space: Chommell, Raioballo and Hutt Space. It was a pity the Lord hadn't traveled a smaller amount of space or place therein to be able to search. Of course, it wouldn't do to have not thrown off any pursuers. As well, if the man had not been good at hiding, the ship very well wouldn't exist in this case. Here, though, in a cradle of civilization so to speak, Novak hoped to find answers among the ancient historians, far away from the prying eyes of the Jedi.

[ Though if you aren't planning on jumping in soon-ish, you're welcome to come along later. I plan to start posting on this again to get my own threads moving before the Jedi catch up too quickly. ]

The weathered face that glared at Novak as he disembarked from his ship looked very much like it had evolved on this brutally hot and wind-blasted world. Indeed, the Klatooinians were a hard people with a reputation for thuggery. If this reputation was, in fact, somewhat unfair, it was nonetheless a stereotype that Novak would encounter now, in his first moments on Klatooine. For there could be no mistaking who Prado and his tough-looking band of perhaps ten other Klatooines were, and what they were doing here. Who they were was apparent from the assortment of swoop bikes clustered around the landing pad, and it was obvious from the vibroblades, blaster pistols, and other weapons on conspicuous display—including what appeared to be a disruptor—what they were doing here. A swoop gang, common enough on the Outer Rim and especially in Hutt Space, here to extort hapless spacers.

"Welcome to Klatooine," Prado said in broken Basic, his voice thick with a Huttese accent. Some of the other Klatooinians smiled—or were they bearing their fangs?—at Prado's statement; evidently, Prado (obviously the leader) had meant it sarcastically. "Did you know there is a toll for landing here?" Prado asked him. This time, the courtesy was clearly exaggerated; it was possible that Prado, and almost certain that most of the other swoop jockeys were high on spice at this very moment. "The great Njon the Hutt demands it," Prado explained.

Novak took in the group, standing in a semicircle around the landing pad, including their broad assortment of weapons. Impressive to most, but it was common enough fare for a world on the edge of lawlessness. There were two approaches at hand. The first, violence, was likely to send a message of sorts. It would be brief and messy and it was unlikely anyone would truly care if he removed a swoop gang, and a small swoop gang at that, from Treema's streets. However, it would cause undue issues and reveal more than he was likely to want to reveal. The second option, playing along and perhaps a bit of bribery, therefore, was likely to be the better of the two and perhaps, just perhaps, might help him get what he needed.

"I have heard of the mighty Njon Anjiliac and I would not wish to see him shortchanged by my humble vessel," Novak replied reasonably. "I think you kind gentlemen for reminding me of it, fair toll-masters that you are. If you'd be so kind as to inform me of the price, then I can certainly pay it. Then, perhaps, if you fine gentlemen are looking to make a bit of extra coin, we may be able to come to a mutual understanding; I've come looking for something, you see, and any help finding it would be... greatly rewarded." Not one to be caught off-guard, Novak began pulling the Force to himself, either for use in subtle manipulation or for outright offense.

Prado narrowed his disturbingly Human-looking eyes. There was some whispering in Huttese among the rest of the gang, but Prado waved his hand sharply to silence them. Novak had been more erudite than the kind of travelers who Prado and his gang were used to accosting, but this (and Prado's poor mastery of Basic) aside, he understood what Novak had said even if some of the subtlety was lost upon him. "How much do you have?" he asked, wryly. It was extortion of the crudest sort.

What Novak didn't know was that Prado and the so called "Treema Swoopies" were not, in fact, collecting this toll on Njon's behalf. True, they worked for Njon Anjiliac, but the Hutt knew nothing about this extortion in his name and saw none of the proceeds. If he were to learn about it, he'd no doubt be famously enraged. But Prado and his gang name-dropped Njon nonetheless, since no one wanted to run afoul of the Hutt. Were he aware of this, it might have changed Novak's approach. But as things stood, the use of force—or the Force—was rapidly becoming his only option. As spice-addled as they were, they probably wouldn't be susceptible to mind tricks, either.

"Five thousand credits," Novak stated evenly. "A lump sum that should cover my docking here today and for the rest of my time on-world." It was a tremendous sum; likely more than Prado and his gang extorted in a week's worth of time and easy money like that might well break through, somewhat, to their spice-fueled brains. While Novak didn't, in this particular case, know that the Treema Swoopies were collecting for themselves, it still wouldn't have changed his ends or aims. Novak knew of Njon the Hutt; few who came to Hutt Space, even briefly, could avoid hearing the mention of the being and for all his own wealth and power, even Novak would not dare to openly cross the Anjiliac clan.

"There's more credits to be had as well, if you are willing to perform a small bit of work. I need an escort of sorts; enough of an escort with a reputation such as you fierce gentlemen have, to ensure that the information I seek will be easy to find and then kept from others. Does this sound like a service you could provide, good sir?"

All the while he spoke, Novak was effortlessly threading the Force about the swoop gang's weapons, especially the disruptor, if it were such; not to steal, but more akin to a simple pull that would set all the power packs to overload and of course, detonate. Such a troubling issue would deprive the gang of any of their truly dangerous weapons and create rather a large mess. If they were truly as spice-addled as they appeared to be, dropping the power packs or the weapons might quite be beyond their scope of reason, if it came to it. For Novak, it would be as easy as pulling the pin on a grenade.
