Whilm Dawes didn't sign up for the Royal Security Force to spend half of his time doing paperwork; throughout the week, the Lieutenant avoided his desk as much as he possibly could, then went in to the precinct early on Atunda mornings to catch up. Tired and impossibly bored, his imagination tended to wander. Perhaps this was the reason why, as he looked over a pile of case reports from the last week, he imagined a connection between 1.) a half ton of highly-illegal glitterstim spice found dumped in a swamp outside Theed, 2.) recent complaints about congestion and long delays at Theed's spaceport, and 3.) miners on Naboo's moon, Rori, being attacked by Gungan supremacists—the so-called "Rorigungans," who were known for attacks on the Naboo.

What Dawes had was a hunch, and he knew he'd need more information before he mentioned it to Captain Soban. So, having found an excuse to once again leave his desk, Dawes gathered his hat and his S-5 blaster pistol and took a Seraph-class "Flash" speeder to the scene of the spice dump in the swamp. Part of the swamp had been dredged, revealing the glitterstim spice mired in the mud, ruined. Dawes noted that it appeared to have been dumped there in small amounts, probably over several days. But there was nothing on the scene to identify who had done it.

So he moved on to Theed's spaceport, where the dockmaster provided him with cargo manifests from the past several weeks. It was obvious, from the manifest, that there'd been a sharp increase in the number of Trade Federation freighters--this, no doubt, was the cause of the congestion at the spaceport. The cargo wasn't disclosed (thanks to a gaping loophole in Republic regulations, the Trade Federation wasn't required to disclose cargo below a certain tonnage without a warrant), but the mass of the freighters was recorded, and they appeared to be flying light; that is, considerably below their cargo capacity. That was strange.

With nothing else to go on, and since he was already at the spaceport, Dawes caught a ride up to Naboo's moon, Rori. The spice miners didn't have much to say about the Gungan attack, even though one of them had been seriously injured. Yes, there had been attacks in the past, but usually on prospectors who wandered into Gungan territory. This attack had come suddenly, and with no obvious provocation. Dawes knew there had to be a precipitating event of some kind, but the tight-lipped miners weren't going to tell him anything. So he went into the forest on foot in the direction that the Rorigungan militia had retreated.

And then he disappeared.
